Sample Season Begins

Sample One-Room Schoolhouse Opens May 3, 2008

May is almost here and the Sample School will soon be in session. Students from Seneca Valley elementary schools will be visiting once again to see what it was like to attend school one hundred and thirty four years ago.

There were no cell phones, computers, Ipods, myspace, instant messenger or even writing tablets. None of the things students take for granted today. Students had to write on a piece of slate, thus the expression "starting out with a clean slate". Unlike schools today, which have classrooms and

teachers by the dozen, the old schools had a single classroom and teacher. Cranberry Township had six such one-room schoolhouses evenly dispersed throughout the township.

Of course, you don't have to be a Cranberry Township resident, or even a Seneca Valley student to visit the schoolhouse. Just drop in for a visit and step back to 1874 at the Sample School. Admission is FREE during our regular hours of operation which run May through

September as follows:
  • Wednesday's 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm
  • Saturday's 10:00 am to 12:30 pm

Can't make it during regular hours? Not a problem. Contact us and arrange for your own docent to conduct your tour. Admission for a scheduled tour is $1.00 per person with a $10.00 minimum. We hope to see you soon.
