Flag Program

History of the US Flag

FEBRUARY 12, 2008 We regret to inform you that our previously scheduled speaker Luanne Eisler has had to cancel her presentation, "Insights Into An Historical Gazetteer of Butler County", while she recuperates from a broken bone. We look forward to rescheduling Luanne's presentation when she is ready and able.

Using computer graphics to follow the growth of the country and the evolving design of the flag as each State was admitted to the Union, Roy will highlight laws that affected the appearance of the flag, President’s serving at the time and other key moments as well as a bit of historic controversy as to who designed and made the first US Flag.

Lights out at Sample

If you've driven by the schoolhouse lately, you may be wondering why the candles are out. Fombell native Ken Heusey, now from Los Angeles, is back in the area to work on his movie based upon the life of Edgar Allan Poe. Ken would like to film a scene or two using the schoolhouse, and as a result we have changed it around a bit to more closely resemble the year 1837. Thus the electric candles had to come down for a while. The school does not look the same without them and they will be the first items returned after filming is complete.

The movie is a low budget film and we suspect it may not be big enough to be shown at the local theatre, however we will figure out a way to get it shown here when the time comes even if we have to project it ourselves in the Council Chambers. In return for allowing him to film at our schoolhouse, Ken has offered to donate a reproduction 1874 era flag from www.usflag.org as well as a small cash donation to the Historical Society.
