Fall 2007

Coming This Fall

Tuesday September 18, 2007
If you attended Joe Bullick's presentation earlier this year, you will recall that Joe invited us to visit his museum located in McKnight Elementary School in McCandless Township. Joe has many items to see and discuss and it will be a trip you won't want to miss. We will meet at the rear door of the Cranberry Municipal Building and travel as a group to the museum. We will be leaving the Municipal Building at 9:00 AM sharp, so don't be late!

Ghost Rails II

Pittsburgh vs Baltimore 11/5/2007

Sunday November 4, 2007
Our final program of the year will feature local author Wayne Cole, who will join us in Council Chambers at the Cranberry Township Municipal Center at 2 pm to discuss the subject of his book, Ghost Rails II. Most of us are rather familiar with Lake Arthur, but what about what was under the lake before there was a lake? Wayne's presentation will cover the old railroad grade that ran alongside Muddy Creek from Queen Junction to Coopers Lake - pretty much straight through the middle of what is now Lake Arthur. Also discussed will be the coal towns along that abandoned rail and the mines that had to be sealed in order to fill the lake. After peeking at the 1874 township maps of Worth, Brady, Muddy Creek and Franklin Townships, we won't be surprised to learn that the site of a one room schoolhouse or two has been covered by the lake as well and even part of the Franklin Road/Venango Path.

BCTCB Photo Contest Winner
Earlier this year the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau held a photography contest. Third place was awarded to Arlene Conley and her image of the interior of Sample School. You can read about this years contest, previous years contests and next years contest by following this link to the BCTCB website.
